Rheumatoid arthritis is a painful inflammatory condition of the joints marked by swelling, thickening and inflammation of the synovial membrane lining the joint. (By contrast, osteoarthritis is characterized by breakdown of the joint cartilage without swelling or inflammation.)
Rheumatoid arthritis is classified as an autoimmune disease because it is caused by the body’s own immune system attacking the joints.
Other factors can aggravate arthritis such as:
- Deficiencies of minerals and other nutrients
- Microbes and toxins
- Lack of water intake
Essential oils constitute some of the most effective treatments for combating arthritis and pain and combating infections (if present). Peppermint has been studied for its ability to kill pain by blocking substance P and calcium channels (Gobel et al., 1994).
In cases where arthritis is caused by infectious organisms, such as Borrelia bugdorferi, (Lyme disease), chlamydia, and salmonella, essential oils may counteract and prevent infection, especially when diffused or applied topically. Highly antimicrobrial oils include: mountain savory, rosemary, tea tree, and oregano.
