Adrenal Gland Disorder

Jodie December 16, 2024

The adrenal glands consist of two sections: an inner part called the medulla, which produces stress hormones, and an outer part called the cortex, which secretes critical hormones called glucocorticoids and aldosterone. Because of those two hormones, the cortex has a far greater impact on our overall health than the medulla does.

So why are aldosterone and glucocorticoids so important? Well, it’s because they have a direct impact on our blood pressure and minerals that help regulate the conversion of carbohydrates into energy. When these are low or high, that imbalance causes major issues within our bodies.

For instance, in cases like Addison’s Disease, our adrenal cortex hormones fail to produce sufficient amounts or even none of the critical hormones needed, which can lead to life-threatening fluid and mineral loss unless those hormones are replaced. Whereas with Cushing’s Syndrome (or Disease), our bodies have too much of the hormone cortisol or other adrenal cortex hormones. Let’s take a closer look at both and see what you can use to help if you’re dealing with either.

Addison’s Disease

Addison’s disease is an autoimmune disease in which the body’s own immune cells destroy the adrenal glands. Sulfurzyme, which contains MSM (an important source of organic sulfur), is known to have positive effects in fighting many types of autoimmune diseases, such as lupus, arthritis, and fibromyalgia.

Note: if adrenal sufficiency is accompanied by a lack of thyroid hormone, that condition is known as Schmidt’s syndrome.

Symptoms associated with Addison’s Disease:

  • Severe fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Lightheadedness when standing
  • Depression/Irritability
  • Craving salty foods
  • Muscle spasms
  • Dark, tan-colored skin

Some essential oils have components within and structures that have adrenal-like action, which can enable them to play a part by supporting the body’s own systems and strengthening those adrenal cortex functions, helping correct those deficiencies. Nutmeg and EndoFlex, for example, have adrenal-like activity that raise energy levels.

  • Master Formula: take daily

Cushing’s Syndrome (Disease)

Cushing’s Syndrome is like the reverse or opposite of Addison’s Disease, being a adrenal gland imbalance that is characterized by the overproduction of adrenal cortex hormones such as cortisol. Even though these hormones are crucial to sound health when produced in normal amounts, if the overproduction of them goes unchecked, they can be just as harmful as when they are underproduced.

Symptoms associated with Cushing’s Syndrome:

  • Low resistance to infection
  • Obesity
  • Slow wound healing
  • Acne
  • Easily bruised skin
  • Moon-shaped face
  • Weak or wasted muscles
  • Osteoporosis

While Cushing’s Syndrome can be caused by a malfunction in the pituitary gland, it’s more commonly triggered by excessive use of immune-suppressing corticosteroid medications, like the ones used for arthritis or asthma. The disease often fades once those medications are stopped. A big key to reducing excess cortisol production is finding ways to reduce stress.
