My 22yo son is getting ready to enter the Coast Guard. People are telling him that he should get his wisdom teeth removed before basic because they will likely remove them during basic and he won’t have proper time to recover. I’m not a fan of removing teeth when there is no issue and just because it seems to be a rite of passage in the US ($$). However in the military he will not have much choice. Any suggestions on how to best support this process?

Hi Jennifer! First, we always always have choices, especially when it comes to what is done to our bodies. If his teeth do not pose him any issues, he should not get them removed. However if there is a risk that they may cause a problem (impaction for example) it may be safer to do so before being in the military.

Thank you. If it were my choice I would not have them removed, however he is 22 so I’m just here to guide 🙂
